Snap, Crack, Pop?

Every Thursday morning I take the boys with me to the chiropractor. I only get seen every other week to get adjusted. But why do I go every single week? Because Killian receives chiropractic care. Dr. Tollenar is a fantastic physician who is very patient and knowledgable about his field of alternative medicine. I bet you didn’t realize that chiropractic care does more than just help your back and neck to feel better or stop headaches, did you? Did you know that being adjusted by a Chiropractor can relieve sinus pressure, ear infections, vertigo, colic, asthma, and more? Let’s dive in a bit and I will explain better why I take my 4.5 year old and my almost 2 year old to regular chiropractic visits.

Childhood can be a physically traumatic time. Especially in the case of my accident prone, adventure child, Oliver. Most children will take plenty of tumbles as they learn to crawl, walk, run, and engage in games, sports, and other physical activities. While small tumbles may not seem to cause extensive discomfort, they can cause shifts in the child’s musculoskeletal system that set the stage for subluxations . These misalignments can press on spinal nerves and interfere with the efficient function of the child’s nervous system, harming their body’s ability to function optimally. Correcting these misalignments can improve a child’s wellness and help to head off future problems. Subluxation is known as damage to the spinal joints and nerves that effects the neurological flow in the body.

Children aren’t just tiny humans. As any parent knows, children’s little bodies are growing and changing at an unbelievable rate. While this allows chiropractic care to be particularly effective for kids, it also means that treating them requires more than a good bedside manner and plenty of patience for wiggling. As the American Chiropractic Association explains, children’s joints are still forming, so adjustments should generally be delivered more quickly and with less force. Pediatric chiropractic adjustments require changes in-depth, contacts, and technique. That’s why the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) offers specialized training programs for chiropractors who want to offer pediatric chiropractic services.

When children are treated with chiropractic care, their parents are likely to notice several important benefits. According to ICPA, parents of children who receive chiropractic treatment report the following:

  • Better Sleep: Tension, discomfort, and dysfunction can make falling and staying asleep difficult. By alleviating these issues, chiropractic care can improve children’s sleep and help them to get the rest that they need to function effectively.
  • Improved Attitude and Behavior: As anyone who has dealt with an over-tired child will testify, better sleep can improve a child’s outlook and conduct. In addition, reducing problems in the neurological system by treating subluxations can also foster better attitudes and improved behavior.
  • Better Immune System Function: Like the rest of a child’s body, their immune system is immature. Subluxations that impair neurological function can interfere with the proper function of the immune system. Correcting these misalignments with expert chiropractic care supports the child’s immune system and facilitates its effective function.

In children, subluxations can cause developmental issues, including sensory processing disorders. About five percent of grade school children are diagnosed with sensory processing disorders. This means that they have trouble understanding, detecting, or communicating with sensory stimuli. Sometimes these conditions can affect Autism, ADD and ADHD. Chiropractic treatments are now being used to help correct these disorders. This television interview on WBZ 38 Health Watch shows the benefits of chiropractic care in children with ADHD symptoms. Dr. Marty Rosen, ICPA Certification instructor for SOT.

Killian has Autism, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Disorder which is why I sought to establish him with a chiropractor that a good friend of mine recommended (she, her husband, and both of her young boys are treated by Dr. Tollenar as well).

Chiropractors specially trained in infant chiropractics are able to use thermographicelectromyography to find out where the trauma is on the infant and improve how the nervous system functions. These chiropractors are trained in knowing how to observe the body to find out the exact location that needs to be worked on.

In 2011, there were two studies that showed how chiropractic specifically helped children with sensory processing disorders and autism. Both patients had upper cervical subluxation that were diagnosed as having occurred due to early childhood trauma. Both underwent a series of chiropractic manipulations that eventually removed the subluxation as well as improved the neurological flow. Case studies on children with neuro-developmental issues have shown that chiropractic treatments improve their condition. The improvement from chiropractic manipulation supports the idea that subluxation plays a part in creating these sensory processing disorders in children.

Wellness visits allow a chiropractor to identify and treat problematic subluxations quickly, which can improve a child’s overall health and wellness and offer welcome support for their immune system. The benefits of chiropractic care for children also extend to the treatment of many specific conditions, including the following:

  • Ear infections
  • Digestive issues
  • Allergies
  • Colic
  • Asthma
  • Sleep issues
  • Sports injuries
  • Headaches
  • Concentration and focus issues
  • Irritable baby syndrome
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Asperger’s syndrome, autism, and autism spectrum disorders

So what about babies? When they are in the womb, the closer you both get tom birth, the more cramped and uncomfortable you both get. And as much as we as the mom’s feel like our kid is going to bust out of us all ALIENS style, just imagine being stuck in a sack in the most awkward and incommodious position. Their little bodies are torked into a form that isn’t quite the optimal spinal positioning. Gentle manipulations in certain key areas of your baby’s body can help to ease tension and strain, as well as correct nerve problems that may arise after a C-section or natural birth. The birth process can be traumatic for both mom and baby and affect the nerves in the body.

When adjusting a newborn, a skilled chiropractor will only use the amount of pressure that you would use to comfortably push on your eye. The child gets checked by hand and with technology, then is placed in position (usually in Mom’s lap), and gentle pressure is applied. That’s all there is to it. It’s simple, safe, and effective.

Two major studies on chiropractic and infantile colic have shown that over a period of two weeks (usually three visits) 94% of babies adjusted by chiropractors showed a successful rating, with 25 % showing improvement after the first adjustment. Dr. S. Vallone, in a 2007 study, concluded, “Chiropractic adjustments in the early stages of neurologic imprinting appear to safely and effectively address the craniocervical dysfunction and help restore natural, efficient suckling patterns for infants who are unable to successfully latch.”

Five additional benefits to chiropractic care in infancy include, but are not limited to:

  • Birth recovery, especially in a traumatic birth
  • Colic
  • Immune health
  • General and overall wellness
  • Fussiness

And let’s not forget one of the above reasons for chiropractic care, IMPROVED SLEEP!! If baby and toddler sleep better, then mom/dad sleep better! I mean, if that isn’t reason enough then I don’t know what is.

So, what do you think? Is it worth trying out for you and your family?
